The main function of the excavator wedge oil cylinder – right is to control the excavator’s boom movements.
The working principle of an excavator relies on the hydraulic system, especially the application of hydraulic cylinders. For example, the boom movement of the excavator is achieved by controlling the piston position in the hydraulic cylinder, thereby controlling the lifting and extension of the boom to complete tasks such as digging and loading.
Furthermore, the design of the excavator’s cylinders considers the practical application requirements. For instance, the boom of an excavator has significant weight, so the cylinder design needs to withstand this weight. Double-acting cylinders (such as the hydraulic boom cylinder, arm cylinder, and bucket cylinder) generate force by multiplying the projected area of the piston rod cavity by the oil pressure, with the force in the rodless cavity far greater than in the rod cavity. This design helps improve work efficiency and operational stability.
