The main function of the flywheel housing in an excavator is to bear part of the weight of the engine and transmission, connect the engine to the transmission, protect the clutch and flywheel, and also serve as a supporting component for the engine.
The flywheel housing is a cast iron part designed to withstand significant loads, external forces, and irregular vibrations. It is typically installed between the engine and the transmission, connecting to the crankcase externally and housing the flywheel assembly, starter, oil pan, and other components internally. The structural characteristics of the flywheel housing include a simple design that makes it easy to install, and it usually features cooling vents and waterproof covers to facilitate heat dissipation and remove metal particles.
The machining quality of the flywheel housing directly affects the performance of the engine. Its complex part structure resembles a bowl shape with a thin-wall design, but the bottom positioning surface is partially suspended (1/3), leading to poor rigidity of the workpiece, making it prone to deformation during machining. This makes it a challenging part to manufacture.
Damage or deformation of the flywheel housing can significantly impact the engine, such as causing misalignment between the engine and transmission centers, affecting power transmission, increasing wear on the driven components, and even producing unusual noises during operation. Therefore, the correct installation and maintenance of the flywheel housing are essential for ensuring the normal operation of the excavator.
