The main function of the piston assembly in an excavator is to withstand the combustion pressure within the cylinder and transfer this force through the piston pin and connecting rod to the crankshaft, thereby converting the internal energy of the fuel into mechanical energy.
The piston assembly is a critical component of the excavator’s engine, consisting of several core parts, including the piston, piston rings, and piston pin. The piston is the heart of the assembly, with its top directly in contact with the combustion chamber, designed with a flat or near-flat top to evenly distribute stress. The ring grooves in the piston are used to install the piston rings, which serve a sealing function. The skirt of the piston acts as a guiding part, maintaining the piston in a vertical position during its reciprocating motion, ensuring smooth engine operation. The piston pin is the key component that connects the piston to the small end of the connecting rod, allowing for flexible movement and power transmission.
Additionally, the top of the piston, along with the cylinder head and cylinder wall, forms the combustion chamber, a structure that significantly impacts the efficiency and performance of the engine. The working environment of the piston assembly is extremely harsh, requiring operation under high temperature, high pressure, and high speed. Therefore, strict requirements are imposed on its materials and manufacturing processes to ensure the normal operation of the excavator and to extend its lifespan.
